These sponge filters only use 5 watts of power and will not need an air pump to operate. The small powerhead sucks water through the biological media and sponge and creates a nice flow of water. You have the option to use the air bubbler that you can connect to the outflow if you want to create more aeration. The filter uses a USB connection as seen in the photo so you will need an adapter if plugging directly into the wall outlet. The biological media is stores in the green cups which is connected at the bottom of the filter as seen in the photo.
