Ensuring an ideal environment for healthy fish requires understanding what your water parameters are, to do so you need the proper tools. GH-general hardness is the balance between calcium and magnesium while KH is carbonate hardness and measures the amount of carbonates in the water. Plants and animals require minerals to survive and some require more than orders. While soft water fish require low levels of minerals, some harder water fish, shrimps, and plants require high amounts of minerals in the water. KH and pH are closely correlated as the more carbonates are in the water (KH) the higher the pH will be.
