Starter culture of green water. You get 400ml or more per culture and a pack of nutrients so you can keep growing more green water. There will be enough nutrients provided so that you can grow up to 40 gallons of green water. This is a great starter culture which you can grow to continually feed your daphnia. Especially when growing daphnia indoors, you really need to make sure they are well fed to keep them alive and multiplying. Because indoors is typically warmer than outdoors, the daphnia’s metabolism is much higher and therefore requires more frequent feeding to keep them alive and breeding. Therefore it is very important to grow green water to continually feed your daphnia indoors!
Some daphnia species prefer temperatures below 22C so best to grow both the green water and daphnia in the coolest places of your home. When growing daphnia and green water cultures indoors, it’s best to use some aeration in both cultures.
We grow our green water indoors at 18C with slight aeration. We also have a HOT5 light above our cultures to keep the algae growing. We also feed our green water so don’t forget to add the nutrients!
Instructions: For every 4 gallons of dechlorinated water you use 1 tsp (5 grams) of the nutrients and mix. Allow to mix and dissolve completely before adding green water starter. You can add at least 100ml of green water or more to start. The more you add the faster the culture will grow. Once the green water darkens, you can feed your daphnia and add more green water when the daphnia has eaten most of the green water. You will notice that the green water in the daphnia culture lighten. This is a sign that the daphnia are filtering out the green water to feed and grow. You may notice that you’d need to feed your daphnia once a week and when your culture starts to grow a lot more, more frequent feedings may be needed. Keep harvesting the green water until you’re left with enough to feed for a week, then you pour this remaing green water into a container to save. Now that your original green water container is empty, clean out the container and repeat as listed above to remake a new batch of green water using the remaininggreen water you put aside. Make sure you aerate both your green water and daphnia cultures when growing them indoors.
